In the 1720s and 30s ‘Brighthelmstone’, as it was then known began to be used as a bathing resort. However, its real transformation into a centre of fashion began in the 1750s with the publication of Dr. Richard Russell’s medical sea-bathing cures.

The Town by the Sea

These two pieces are part of an exercise that revisits previous artwork. If it works small, it might work big too. A simple line of thought that implied a mammoth effort and long time on the drawing board. Two iconic images of Brighton. The Royal Pavilion and the Palace Pier.

Brighton Palace Pier axonometric view. -Brighton Victorian leisure Palace Pier. The Palace Pier was constructed as a replacement for the Chain Pier, which collapsed in 1896 during construction. It quickly became popular, and had become a frequently-visited theatre and entertainment venue by 1911. Aside from closures owing to war, it continued to hold regular entertainment up to the 1970s. The theatre was damaged in 1973 and following a buy-out was demolished in 1986, changing the pier’s character from seaside entertainment to an amusement park, with various fairground rides and roller coasters. Print size 1020 x 420 mm  From £180.

Chinoiseriez. -Homage to the interior of the Brighton Royal Pavilion and South Asian dragons from the Southern Song dynasty dated 1244 by artist Chen Rong. Under the spell of Brighton Pavilion Chinoiserie. Fun ravenous dragons populate the sky over Brighton Town. They have escaped from the Royal Pavilion after many years of confinement in their gold cages. Woo hoo!! Freedom at last! Hurrah!

Chinoiseriez (1) size 594 x 841 mm. illustration excerpt

Chinoiseriez. The name of this artwork made by addition of the term chinoiserie and my surname Ez

Chinoiserie is a decorative style in Western art, furniture, and architecture, especially in the 18th century, characterized by the use of Chinese motifs and techniques.

To illustrate the dragons I have researched the piece ‘Nine Dragons’ a handscroll painting by Chinese artist Chen Rong from 1244. Depicting the apparitions of dragons soaring amidst clouds, mists, whirlpools, rocky mountains and fire, the painting refers to the dynamic forces of nature in Daoism. The depicted dragons are associated with nine sons of the Dragon King, while the number nine itself is considered auspicious in Chinese astrology and folk beliefs.

Chinoiserie dragons Brighton pavilion domes (4) print size A4; 21×29.7cm, frame size 30x40cm. This dragon in particular was found at the banqueting room at the Brighton Pavilion, perched on a blue Spode porcelain, ormolu and wood pedestal lamp.

Chinoiserie dragons Brighton pavilion domes (5) print size A4; 21×29.7cm, frame size 30x40cm. On a few occasions that I have visited the pavilion it has always struck me that whilst outside is and Indian and Gothic palace, inside is a Chinese fantasy populated by dragons. There is no doubt this dragons if they had a say would prefer the open air!
