7 notecards with the theme of Classic Dancers of the 18th and 19th cs.

My friend John told me about the intrepid lives of the 18th and 19th cs. classic dancers. And now I happily daydream about these, in their time, famous characters dwelling in my landscapes.

Pepita tells the extraordinary story of Vita Sackville-West’s grandmother Josefa (Pepita), and her mother Victoria. Josefa, the half-gypsy daughter of an old-clothes pedlar from Malaga, makes her fortune as a dancer in Madrid; soon she is the toast of all Europe. Her affair with a young English attaché then sets the scene for a most bizarre family history. After her early death, her daughter Victoria is condemned to an austere convent until the age of eighteen. Socially ostracized without knowing why, she is suddenly whisked off to become mistress of her diplomat father’s Washington household. Eventually this illegitimate half-Spanish waif finds herself the volatile and wayward mistress of Knole, one of the grandest houses in England. Vita Sackville-West’s fascination with this unlikely inheritance brings her two subjects vividly to life – the wild and mysterious Pepita, and the adored yet impossible Victoria.

Fanny Elssler .1810 -1884. Born in Vienna became one of the most famous dancers in the World. In Naples became the mistress of Prince Leopold of Salerno. Their secret son was placed with a foster home so he could continue her career. Frederich von Gentz took on educating Fanny in German and French when he was 65 and she was 19. Her success in dancing continued from The Paris Opera to the USA, Cuba, London, Moscow, Budapest until the age of 41.

Jules Perrot a Russian dancer. 1810-1892. He became the Ballet Master of the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg. As a choreographer he created the famous ballet of ‘Giselle’.

Antoine Paul. Dancer 1798-1871. Born in Marseille. Named ‘L’Aérien’ being superior in elasticity, softness, lightness, speed and precision.
