This prints completed in the summer of 2020 combines in one image my passion for swimming, my architectural training by showing the Artdeco Modernist building and my love for nature with the beautiful cliffs of the Southdown Coast. I look forward to the reopening of the Lido to enjoy all this like the two figures you can see in my print that are immersed in pool bathed by the summer morning sun.
The Saltdean Lido is an Art Deco building designed by architect R.W.H. Jones. listed at Grade II* by English Heritage. I am passionate about swimming and drawing, combining both gives me great joy. Also in view is the beautiful coastline with the undulating chalk cliffs. The lido was built in 1937-38, its design was hailed as the most innovative design of its type in Britain. With its tea terrace, sun deck, café, perched on the flat roof and distinctive curved wings at either end, it became the only lido to be featured in the Design Museum in London.(wiki source)
The Lido is run by The Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, it is a ‘not for profit’ organisation set-up by volunteers to return Saltdean Lido to its former glory. The first phase of its restoration has been completed with the re-creation of the original 1938 swimming crescent-shaped pool. Phase Two will see the main building restored to its former glory to open its door to the public by 2023.
This print depicts East Saltdean with what was once the Grand Ocean, a luxury hotel opened in 1938, designed by architect RWH Jones with the classic moderne styling of the age and that is currently luxury apartments; and on the East side over the road is the Whitecliffs Cafe with its expansive view of the chalk cliffs and the English Channel.
