Swimmers Expressions of Movement
Print description
This print combines two of my passions in life: swimming and the depiction of the human form in art.
I have been training with Out to Swim since 2019. My other passion is the depiction of the human form, which I have explored for many years through running Brighton Draws Men, a life-drawing session in Brighton.
The initial sketches for this print were created using Hirameki, a playful Japanese art form based on finding unexpected figures and images within random ink splotches. The word hirameki means “a flash of inspiration” or “brainwave”. I used the accidental shapes of the ink as a starting point, allowing swimmers, gestures and movements to emerge from them.
The resulting experimental print shows a cluster of swimmers underwater — tumble turns, butterfly strokes, swirling and scaling, with movement going in all directions. Bodies are immersed in water, suspended and weightless. Each square inch of skin is subject to the same pressure, holding the figures as weightless as if suspended in air.
