Brighton and Hove

from the East end of the Hove Lawns the resulting image compels a record of architectural styles. Starts with the Regency architecture of Brunswick Terrace to follow the Modernist building of Embassy Court,  the Mercure Hotel and the high rise 60’s of Sussex Heights. Near us is The Piece Statue and the popular Meeting Place Café. Furthermore the architectural tour is completed with the remains of the Victorian West Pier.

Embassy Court.

I remember in 2005 I saw a wonderful fireworks display at the seafront. The rarity is that most fireworks were coming out from different balconies and terraces of Embassy Court. The occasion was marking the restoration after a long period of decline of Embassy Court.

Designed by the architect Wells Coates and completed in 1935, Embassy Court stands amongst the most outstanding examples of pre-war Modernism in the UK. It shares the modernist features of the time: a curved façade, interrupted horizontal openings with metal frame crittall windows and doors, balconies and set back terraces in the upper floors with flat roofs. What is most important is that in my opinion, it compliments perfectly the Regency architecture of the Regency Terrace.

The Peace Angel Statue and Meeting Place Cafe.

The peace statue stands in the invisible division boundary line between Brighton and Hove and next to the popular Meeting Place Cafe. The statue depicts an angel of peace that  holds an orb and an olive branch. It is in fact a memorial to Edward VII, ‘The Peacemaker’, who convalesced several times in Brighton and restored some of the town’s fashionable reputation.

Newbury Trent designed this memorial that also bears the arms of both Brighton and Hove boroughs. Finally the Duke of Norfolk unveiled The statue in October 1912.

Print collection Ocean Blue

This print belongs to a tonal collection named ‘Ocean Blue’.  Namely this tonal collection reflects on the aquamarine colours of the sea. Imagine yourself on a summer’s day walking on the Palace Pier in Brighton. Look down through the gaps of the wooden deck to see the sea glistening like jewels in the sun. Then later lounge on a deck chair and watch the English Channel in Ocean Blue.
