Bosham Harbour Chichester West Sussex

Print description

This print looks from the Chidham Bank onto the Bosham Channel and the countryside. In the distant hills you can see Kingley Vale. This place is famous for its ancient yew trees which are among the oldest living things in Britain. Several are at least 500 years old. At the top of Kingley Vale you can see in my print (with a magnifying glass) three of the four existing Bronze Age barrows under the mysterious name of ‘The Devil’s Humps’. Bosham is a coastal village and civil parish near Chichester with a beautiful Quay.  Through the trees you can see the bell tower of the Holy Trinity Church. This church has history dating back to medieval times and even a mention in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Bosham Village

Bosham is possibly the oldest site of Christianity in Sussex and dates back to c.681. The Trinity church sits on the site of an ancient Roman basilica and where the Saxon church once stood. The tower is the only part of the Saxon remains that can be seen today. There is also a memorial to King Canute’s daughter, who is said to have drowned in the nearby mill stream.

Kingley Vale and the Devil’s Humps

Kingley Vale is famous for its twisted and ancient yews, including a grove of veteran trees which are amongst the most ancient living things in Britain. It also has wonderful chalk grassland, and is one of the most important archaeological sites in southern England.
