Seaside Art

The presence of the sea occurs in many of my prints, it is a common denominator. In this article under the name Coastal Art I describe the different ways in which the sea appears. Either in the form of panoramic landscapes, by coastal cities or in the countryside, and depicting the particular flora and fauna of each ecosystem.

I love the sea, I was brought up by the sea in Tarifa, a city in the South of Spain and currently I live in Brighton, a city in the South Coast of England. My residence is I just two minutes from the shore.

I don’t know if living by the sea was by choice, chance or a life necessity. But here I am, expressing in art this circumstance again and again, like the waves of the sea reaching the shore.

Coastal Town Art

Cities by the sea have a universal appeal. Cities by the sea are often fun and welcoming. As a paradox the sea might look like an impenetrable boundary, but it it in fact the most travelled channel that links distant cultures and countries.

Sea Print

White cliffs, marshes, deltas , estuaries and other natural landscapes by the sea

When the sea meets chalk land, the result is the formation of white cliffs that bounce and reflect light in incredible ways.

Through the years I have created numerous art prints that depicts different expressions of the natural landscapes of the coast:

Beach Art

This is where my Coastal Art gets personal as I chose in this series to depict people by the coast, spending their leisure time doing fun things. I am a keen sea swimmer and free diver. In the summer I swim in the sea everyday. In Brighton where I live, you will find all sort of activities happening at the seafront: funky Latin dance classes, the swing patrol swirling at the Bandstand, yoga, the famous Park Run at Hove seafront, rollerblading, yoga, paddle-boarding, surfing, kite surfing, kayaking and of course swimming and sunbathing and watching the world go by.

The Printmaking process

To complete one of my prints, I first create original ink drawings. With a lithographic mind I put together separate drawings that will make the textures, main outlines, lights and shades for the art print. These drawings are later overlapped and collaged digitally. I work with pigment fine liners, sandpaper and organic matter such as sponges and feathers.

My prints start as hand drawn monochrome ink drawings. These detailed black drawings bring structure and order. Later on, the addition of colour touches our souls where emotions dwell.
