Eastbourne
The Eastbourne Bandstand is one of the seafront’s most recognisable landmarks. Officially opened on 5 August 1935 by Lord Leconfield, the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, it welcomed an audience of 8,000. The building cost £28,000 and was crowned with a stainless-steel spire. Behind it stands the Queens Hotel, part of the elegant line of seafront hotels that reflects Eastbourne’s long-standing appeal as a sunny seaside resort.
Further along the promenade, Eastbourne Pier stretches out into the sea. Opened by Lord Edward Cavendish in 1870, this beautiful Victorian structure has a clever engineering feature: its supporting legs rest in cups on the seabed, allowing the pier to move with the waves in rough weather.
