‘Night Moon and the Long Man of Wilmington.’
Print description
The Long Man of Wilmington sits within the landscape of the South Downs National Park. It has been depicted by many well known artists such as Eric Ravilious. My take focuses on the terracette formations. These are small irregular step-like formations on steep hillslopes, especially on those used for pasture which are formed by soil creep or erosion of surface soils exacerbated by the trampling of livestock such as sheep or cattle. Another explanation for this formation is the expansion and contraction of saturated soil in steep hills. The light of the Moon in my landscape accentuates this feature with elongated shadows and creates the illusion of an outdoor ruin of a Roman amphitheatre.
