Swifts and Mercury Fountain Gardens of Seville Alcazar

Print description

From childhood, I remember climbing the steps of a historic building in Seville and looking up to see swifts swirling above me at vertiginous speed. This is the feeling I wanted to recapture in this print, combined with the lovely memory of a recent visit to the Alcázar of Seville with my dad, where we walked over the ancient Almohad walls.

Video of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of pigment marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is ink and often charcoal and wash. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.

The Spring Fresco. Athens Archaeological Museum

I love echoing art from other cultures and artists—a homage to inventive minds before us. A month before my visit to Seville, I went to Athens, where at the Archaeological Museum you can see the only wall painting at Akrotiri found in situ. It spans three walls of a room, depicting the rocky Theran landscape before the eruption. Red lilies with yellow stems sway in the wind while swallows swoop above, alone or in playful pairs, heralding nature’s annual rebirth. Painted in vivid black, white, red, yellow, and blue, its lively movement is attributed to the painter of the Crocus Gatherers.

Print details

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

Reales Alcazares de Sevilla and my Dad

Every time I visit my parents in Seville, Spain, we always find time to visit our favourite places in Seville. One of our favourites is The Alcazar. This time in July 2025 we did a special tour walking on top of the historic wall, enjoyed the view from Carlos V balcony and then had a café in the gardens where we also feed the peacocks.

Gallery of the Grotesque and the Water Organ

The Gallery of the Grotesque is an ornate terrace within the gardens of the Real Alcázar of Seville. Originally part of an Almohad wall, it was transformed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries into a richly decorated promenade. With stonework resembling marine rock formations by architect Vermondo Resta, and vivid murals of mythological creatures and exotic birds by Diego Esquivel, the gallery overlooks the Mercury Pond and offers sweeping views of the gardens below.

Also shown in my print is one of my favourite places to sit, relax, and watch the world go by. Nearby, hidden in a niche in the garden walls, is the Water Organ—an ingenious 17th-century fountain that still plays music every hour, powered by water pressure.

Designed during the reign of Philip IV, it is one of the earliest known examples of hydraulic musical technology. Water from the garden’s aqueduct system creates air pressure, forcing sound through organ pipes concealed within the masonry.

Its intricate stonework and architectural setting evoke a magical atmosphere, deepening the garden’s sense of marvel and illusion—where engineering and ornament, nature and invention, merge seamlessly.
