Modern art and childhood memories

The Greek islands, with their sun-drenched shores, have long been a source of inspiration for artists and poets alike. Their rugged landscapes, dotted with pine groves and cradled by the endless expanse of the ocean,

Personal memories of childhood, running through sand dunes, the scent of pine filling the air. These natural havens, however, hold both beauty and challenge, such as the persistent presence of Procesionaria caterpillars, a familiar sight in Mediterranean woodlands, reminding us that nature’s charm can often come with hidden perils.

For artists like John Craxton and Konstantinos Maleas, the islands were more than a backdrop; they were muses. Maleas, a leading figure in modern Greek art, captured the vivid light and colours of the Aegean in bold strokes, while Craxton, enchanted by the same landscapes, depicted the islands in a style that fused realism with abstraction. These places became not just scenes, but symbols of personal and creative freedom.

The serene isolation of the islands also resonated with British modernist Ben Nicholson, whose abstract works, though often more minimalist, echoed the sense of space and form found in these Greek landscapes. Like the rugged coastline shaped by wind and water, Nicholson’s art explored simplicity and depth, capturing the essence of place in an abstract form.

Amidst these artistic reflections, the words of Pablo Neruda seem to rise like a gentle sea breeze. His poetry, with its deep connection to the natural world, speaks of love, memory, and the passage of time—echoes of childhood moments spent by the sea, where pine groves meet the dunes, and the sounds of waves whisper eternal stories.

In this interplay of nature, art, and memory, we find a timeless bond between the inner landscapes of human experience and the physical world, as seen through the eyes of these great artists and poets. Just as the Greek islands have shaped their creative visions, so too have they shaped the memories and dreams of generations, where even the smallest details, like the presence of a caterpillar or the scent of the ocean, carry profound meaning.

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of specialised marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is ink ,watercolour and charcoal. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.
