Cat Art
My love for cats and art was rekindled during my visit to John Craxton: A Modern Odyssey at Pallant House Gallery in 2023 — I couldn’t help noticing how often cats curl into his compositions. They sprawl under tables, loiter beside musicians, or perch with that effortless Greek cool. Craxton’s cats are quietly present, self-contained, and undeniably charismatic.
In Athens in July 2025, I was fascinated by these fellows around the town and by how often they appeared in art at the Benaki Museum and the National Gallery of Athens.
When I started making art prints in 2010, I drew a reclining cat with calligraphic Chinese brushes. Somehow, this is still the core of my practice.
It is not all roses, though. Cats kill many songbirds every year. Some recommendations include keeping cats indoors, especially during spring and early summer (nesting season); using bird-safe collars or bells to give birds a chance to escape; feeding cats well and stimulating them with play so they hunt less out of boredom; and creating bird-friendly gardens with cover and feeding stations out of cats’ reach.
