Still Life Onion

I often challenge my practice with experimentation and the choice of the depiction of for me different subjects. This design is very different to my architectural prints, natural landscapes, rr my studies of flora and fauna.

I embarked this print project as a challenge to depict everyday things that surrounds us at home. I kept these onions in the kitchen on this platter waiting to be used.

Nonetheless my approach to creating this still life follows the same method I use when creating a large landscape or architectural design with the aim to put together a coherent clean composition and a harmonious arrangement of the subject matter. Once these parameters are set my focus is creating a strong graphic representation with a cohesive colour palette.

Onion print

Domesticity, subjects related to the place we inhabit, become part of who you are. There has always been garlic in the kitchen since I was a child, even for breakfast spread on toast with olive oil and tomatoes. Garlic is one of the ingredients of sofrito, which then makes the base for many meals in Mediterranean cuisine. In art, we can look at the sublime and the mundane, and this print focuses on the second one, as a humble celebration of food and living.

Willow Pattern Palter

Last year a friend of mine gave my a gorgeous kitchen platter. I am not sure how old it is a the the famous English Willow Pattern design has been reproduced endlessly from the 18th century to this day. It is without doubt one of the most quintessentially English, that obviously depicts an invented Asian scene in blue porcelain. For my design I somehow simplified the exercise as I only used the surround with its gorgeous graphic elements.
