Angel Basketball

Print description

A mother and son play basketball on a pitch on Brighton seafront. The ball she is playing with becomes a sun. I was once told that Jean Cocteau, in the chapel at the fishing village of Villefranche, modelled his angels on the sailors playing basketball by the sea. In this design my angel is of flesh and bone, dedicated to raising her child with health and happiness.

This design has been chosen to represent the Artists Open Houses Festival in Brighton 2026.

Print details

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

Brighton Seafront

Brighton seafront. I live very near this spot and it is very close to my heart. Under the seafront arches is the West Pier Centre, home of the West Pier Trust. From 2020 to 2024 I was the artist in residence, working on these premises every Thursday. The West Pier Trust celebrates the legacy of the West Pier, and one of their projects is the rebuilding of one of the original kiosks. In my print I show this project as completed.

The basketball pitch is always busy. It is great to see that the council promotes well-being for young and old. Brighton Sailing Club has its catamarans moored on the shore. The i360 awaits its visitors, while the hotels on the seafront, such as 124 by Guest House, or the famous Regency fish and chips restaurant, speak of the leisurely, summery nature of our city.

Then there is the mesmerising Golden Spiral. Can you spot some figures dancing next to it? Every Thursday I attend an outdoor dance class in this spot with my teacher, Marta Scott. In this design I have even marked the butterfly roof of my friend Simon’s place, and used just gestural lines in the distance to depict Regency Brunswick Square, where I live by the sea.

Concept drawing for Angel Basketball
Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of specialised marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is watercolour, ink and charcoal. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.
