Il Gatto Rosa di Ercolano

Print description

I created this print after visiting Ercolano, with Mount Vesuvius in the background and the remains of the ancient town all around. I was particularly interested in the contrast between the archaeological landscape, the strong Mediterranean light and the everyday details of the place.

The steps and narrow paths through the site lead you from one scene to another, with glimpses opening up towards the arches and the harbour. The heat is very much part of the experience too — the strong sun, the pale stone and the small areas of shade.

The pink cat became the central character of the composition. I found something similar when walking around Ercolano, where cats seem to be part of the landscape, moving between the ruins, gardens and houses. Here, the cat is doing what cats do: finding a cool place to sleep, tucked behind a ceramic pot, while everything around it carries on in the heat.

Print details

To create this print, I begin by making individual drawings in ink, which I then bring together to form the final composition. I scan these original drawings and digitally add colour. The finished design exists solely in digital form and is printed using archival inks on fine art paper. I release the design as a limited-edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 × 29.7 cm).

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of specialised marker paper using calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sandpaper and other materials. The medium is ink, watercolour and charcoal. I scan these original drawings to form the main linework and patterns in the final print.
