Modern Aphrodite Brighton Beach

Modern Aphrodite Brighton Beach

This print echoes different themes, such as Brighton’s winter swimmers, especially my friend Polly Arnett, to whom I would like to dedicate this design. In July 2025, at the Ancient Agora in Athens, I saw an extraordinary sculpture of Aphrodite, which forms the main body in this design. Soon after completing this print, I came across The Marvel of the World at The Grange Gallery in Rottingdean Heritage, a beautiful artwork from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones. Its loose traces reassured me of the expressiveness in my drawing, with touches that feel mystical and goddess-like.

‘Swimming was practically a way of life with me.’ Tennessee Williams.

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

Beach Art

This print belongs to the series of works I have created under the name ‘Beach Art’. This series celebrates people happily spending their leisure time at the beach. Swimmers, divers, paddleboarders and the occasional  tight-rope walker. Shimmering seas and bright sunny skies bathe with light these characters. The designs have a hint of nostalgia and in my own distinctive style echoes the works of artists such as Robert Tavener and the New Romantic British artists John Minton and Keith Vaughan. The West Pier appears in all the prints in the series. I created this series in April 2021 to mark the start of my art residency with the West Pier Trust.

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of specialised marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is watercolour, ink and charcoal. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.

Salty Sea Birds Brighton

I’ve recently discovered the Seabirds Outdoor Swim, a brilliant community interest company here in Brighton. As keen sea swimmers themselves, they champion outdoor swimming for wellbeing and mental health.

Their profits go back into getting more people into the sea—especially those who need it most. They run welcoming swim groups, events, and free ‘Salted Wellbeing’ sessions for anyone struggling with mental health.

I love their ethos: inclusive, sustainable, community-focused. Their group, the Salty Seabirds, swim year-round on Brighton and Hove beaches—open to all, and full of warmth.
