Description

One dance at the Bandstand Brighton

The Bandstand in Brighton is a popular spot, often taken over by groups of dancers for their practice sessions. This print is a joyful celebration of movement to music, set on the Bandstand and surrounded by the sea, with the West Pier on the horizon. For this artwork, I drew inspiration from a black-and-white drawing by Jean Cocteau of Nijinsky and Diaghilev dancing. The costumes they are wearing are also significant: Nijinsky is dressed in a Giorgio de Chirico costume designed specifically for him, while Diaghilev wears a costume for a mourner in the Ballets Russes production of Le Chant du Rossignol “Song of the Nightingale”, created by Henri Matisse.

Print details

I created this print from my original ink drawings to which I apply colour digitally. Printed on fine art paper using archival inks. I issue the formats A1 & A2,A3 and A4  as limited editions of 100 where I individually sign and number each print.

Dance

Brighton has many dance academies, though there is a very special one that meets at the Bandstand, it is the Swing Patrol. So if you come to visit Brighton, why not join then for a swing?

Beach Art

This print belongs to the series of prints I have created under the name ‘Beach Art‘. This series celebrates people happily spending their leisure time at the beach. Swimmers, divers, paddleboarders and the occasional  tight-rope walker. Shimmering seas and bright sunny skies bathe with light these characters.

With a hint of nostalgia, these designs have my distinctive style and pay homage to the works of artists such as Robert Tavener and the New Romantic British artists John Minton and Keith Vaughan.   The West Pier appears in all the prints in the series. I created this series in April 2021 to mark the start of my art residency with the West Pier Trust.

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of specialised marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is watercolour, ink and charcoal. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.
