And Then Spring Breaks Through

Description

This print depicts one of my favourite walks along the South Downs Way between Southease and Firle, looking towards Seaford and Cuckmere Haven. It’s an epic stretch of the Downs where the white chalk cliffs meet the sea — a landscape that constantly shifts with the seasons and weather. The yellow gorse in bloom marks early spring.

Art References and Echoes

On these walks, I often think of other artists. I’ll catch myself saying, “This is very Ravilious,” or “That harbour could be Julian Trevelyan.” I see places through the lens of art, carrying those associations in how I observe and later draw. Back in the studio, I’m often aware of echoes of Hokusai’s woodcuts or Samuel Palmer’s glowing, dreamlike fields. For me, creating is about understanding how new ideas grow out of what we already know — how experience and knowledge merge into something personal.

Panoramic format. Print size 124 x 30.5 cm approx. Signed print from a limited edition of 100. From original ink drawing to which I apply colour digitally. Printed on fine art paper using archival inks.

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of pigment marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is ink and often charcoal and wash. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.
