Print details

Brunswick Terrace
Early this summer I paid a visit to my favourite art gallery in Brighton, Morena di Luna, it holds extraordinary exhibitions. The artistic impact of that visit was so strong that as I came out I felt my senses heightened and in a receptive mode. Just outside the gallery you can see this view of Brunswick Terrace and Brighton and Hove seafront. This view struck me for its strong formality. The left of my design shows one bay of Brunswick Terrace expressed as a pure ortogonal architectural technical frontal elevational drawing; then echoing the Renaissance rules of point-projection perspective the seafront façade of Brunswick Terrace lines converges impossibly towards the centre of vision. The scene is complete with some of the landmarks of Brighton and Hove seafront: The remains of the West Pier and the Victorian Palace Pier.
Brunswick Terrace belongs to Brunswick Town. Originally, the area had been part of Wick Farm. In 1824 architect Charles Busby entered into an agreement to build a development on land lying at the end east of Hove. The name “Brunswick” was taken from House of Brunswick, a term sometimes used for the House of Hanover, the name of the British royal family at the time.
