Description

The Upright Boat Brighton Fishing Museum

Print description

This print depicts two friends meeting by the Brighton Seafront Fishing Quarter, home to the Brighton Fishing Museum, bathed in sunset hues at the end of the day. One is an artist, sketching his friend, who sits perfectly content, absorbed in a book. The Fishing Quarter in Brighton grew from the old beachside community where families hauled their boats straight from the shingle. Over time, it became both a working hub for fishermen and a landmark of the city’s maritime heritage.

Photograph of print base drawings. I make these formats with calligraphic brushes, fine-line markers, and other tools; in watercolour, ink and charcoal and on separate sheets of A3 size marker paper. These are scanned and form the main line work and patterns in the final print.

Brighton Fishing Museum

Tucked beneath Brighton’s seafront arches, the Fishing Museum preserves the city’s vanished fishing heritage. It offers a glimpse of Brighton before it became a seaside resort, when life revolved around the Channel and the small clinker-built boats that launched from the shingle.

Inside, photographs, carvings, and models tell stories of fishermen’s labour, skill, and humour. A full-size beach boat dominates the gallery, while recordings of old songs bring the community’s spirit to life. Exhibits show how tourism and seaside leisure changed the town, mixing with traditional beach trade, yet the museum honours the resilience and traditions of Brighton’s fishing families.

Though modest, it feels deeply human. Outside, the fishing quarter still links the museum to the working beach, where upright boats wait on the stones, ready for the next day’s work.

Print details

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).
