Bandstand and West Pier Sky Blue

This print captures two much-loved landmarks along the Brighton and Hove promenade: the Palace Pier and the West Pier. The Brighton Bandstand, built in 1884, is known for its ornate Victorian ironwork and elegant circular form. Often called the “Birdcage,” it sits on the seafront overlooking the beach.
It’s a favourite spot for weddings, music, and quiet moments by the sea. Once a grand Victorian pleasure pier, the West Pier opened in 1866 and was famous for its theatre and concert hall. After storm damage and fire, today only its haunting steel skeleton remains in the sea. A powerful symbol of Brighton, it’s beloved for its beauty, history, and sunsets filled with starlings.

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A2 (59.4 cm x 42 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

Photograph of the base drawings for the art print. I draw these on A3 sheets of pigment marker paper with calligraphic brushes, fine-line ink pens, sponges, sand paper and other materials. The medium is ink, charcoal and wash. I scanned these to form the main line work and patterns in the final print.
