Cycle at Low Tide by the West Pier Brighton

Print description

Sometimes, you have to be a bit mad and daring in a sweet and harmless way, just like these two characters in my design. At low tide, with the sandbanks exposed, they decided to cycle in the sand. The perfect, still water reflects, like a magical mirror, the landscape of the West Pier remains, Brighton Beach, and the sky at dusk.

Print details

To create this print, I start by crafting individual drawings in ink, which collectively form a collage comprising the final piece. I scan my drawings and digitally add colour. The original design solely exists in digital format, and I print it using archival inks and paper. I then release my design as a limited edition print, available in standard ‘A’ sizes, ranging from A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm) to A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).

West Pier Remains

Just before night, as the pink hues embrace the exposed sandbanks at low tide, two cyclists enjoy the timeless spectacle that unfolds against the backdrop of the iconic Brighton West Pier Remains.

The West Pier itself stands as a stoic testament to Brighton’s rich history, dating back to its grand opening in 1866. Designed by Eugenius Birch, a renowned Victorian architect, the pier quickly became a symbol of seaside sophistication. Adorned with intricate ironwork and adorned pavilions, it played host to a myriad of entertainments, from concerts to tea dances, attracting visitors from far and wide.

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow on the exposed sandbanks, one can almost hear the echoes of Victorian laughter and revelry that once filled the air. The Brighton West Pier Remains, though weathered by the passage of time and the tumult of the elements, continue to stand proudly, preserving the memories of a bygone era.

In the dance of shadows and light, the interplay of nature’s elements with the remnants of this Victorian marvel paints a vivid tableau of history and romance. It invites us to reflect not only on the beauty of the present moment but also on the enduring legacy of the West Pier and the cultural tapestry it contributed to Victorian Brighton.
