White Cliffs
‘And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.‘
‘Sea Fever’ by John Masefield
Art Print Collection
The lush green chalk dry valleys meet the sea in a clean cut edge. And through the seasons and the constant passing weather this landscape, formed by ancient geological processes, is in constant change.
Afternoons in early spring, the sun stays low near the horizon, the light glimmers and bounces between the sea mist and the cliffs, a light that blinds the spectator, like antique stage limelights, to this grand nature amphitheater. The poet Emily Dickinson said that, there is a light, that when it comes, the landscape listens. And it is then that we feel a strong mystical connection to nature and the landscape, a revelation to the soul. It is this emotion, this moment, that I try to transcribe in my work
As early as 2011 I first created a series of views of the Seven Sisters. Over the years, I have been able to create much larger prints to evoke the sheer scale of the cliffs, whilst remaining true to my love for ink line drawings and the use of bold graphic colour.
This collection of art prints that I created in 2021 is a result of the observation of the Sussex coastline and study of its flora and fauna and geology and topography. And I am conscious of images by Modern British artists such as Eric Slater and Arthur Ridgen Read who depicted these landscapes, albeit with completely different techniques.
